Bobastro played an important role during the Moorish period in Andalusia. In the 9th century, Omar Ben Hafs\u00fan established his headquarters here. From this virtually impregnable location, he led a revolt against the Caliphate of Cordoba for decades. <\/p>\n
Bobastro’s population grew to about 1,500. Refugees, Christians, Mozarabs and various Islamic groups sought protection here from the power of Cordoba. Thanks to its remote location, Bobastro managed to hold out against the powerful caliphate for many years. <\/p>\n
Omar Ben Hafs\u00fan was born in the mountains of M\u00e1laga. After a conflict during his military service, he fled to North Africa. Several years later he returned to Andalusia, determined to build his own empire. Due to high taxes and discontent among the mountain population, he received much support. Among other things, he managed to bring the forts of \u00c1lora and Ardales under his control. Later, Omar converted to Christianity. Presumably he had the famous rock church of Bobastro built during this period. <\/p>\n

The biggest attraction of Bobastro is undoubtedly the Mozarabic rock church. This church is completely carved out of the rock and unique in Spain. <\/p>\n

Life on this mountain top was not easy. Because there was no natural water source, inhabitants had to draw water from lower-lying rivers and streams. The water was brought up by jugs and stored in cisterns carved directly into the rock. <\/p>\n
On a hike, you can still see these old water storage sites.<\/p>\n
Archaeologists also suspect that much of the city is still hidden underground. Therefore, Bobastro remains an important site for historical research on Moorish culture in Andalusia. <\/p>\n
