Discover Bobastro, the hidden rock church of Al-Andalus
Bobastro was once the stronghold of the famous rebel Omar Ben Hafsún and houses the only known Mozarabic rock church from the time of Al-Andalus.
A visit to Bobastro is a trip back to the 9th and 10th centuries, when the Moors ruled large parts of Andalusia.
What is Bobastro?
Bobastro is a historic settlement and archaeological site in the mountains of Málaga, near El Chorro.
The ruins are located on the plateau of Las Mesas de Villaverde, a strategic location surrounded by gorges, ravines and steep cliffs.
Today you can walk here among the remains of a castle, dwellings carved out of the rock, ancient water reservoirs, a necropolis and the famous Mozarabian rock church.
Why is Bobastro important?
Bobastro played an important role during the Moorish period in Andalusia. In the 9th century, Omar Ben Hafsún established his headquarters here. From this virtually impregnable location, he led a revolt against the Caliphate of Cordoba for decades.
Bobastro’s population grew to about 1,500. Refugees, Christians, Mozarabs and various Islamic groups sought protection here from the power of Cordoba. Thanks to its remote location, Bobastro managed to hold out against the powerful caliphate for many years.
Who was Omar Ben Hafsún?
Omar Ben Hafsún was born in the mountains of Málaga. After a conflict during his military service, he fled to North Africa. Several years later he returned to Andalusia, determined to build his own empire. Due to high taxes and discontent among the mountain population, he received much support. Among other things, he managed to bring the forts of Álora and Ardales under his control. Later, Omar converted to Christianity. Presumably he had the famous rock church of Bobastro built during this period.
The unique Mozarabic rock church of Bobastro
The biggest attraction of Bobastro is undoubtedly the Mozarabic rock church. This church is completely carved out of the rock and unique in Spain.
Why is this church so special?
- The only known Mozarabian rock church from the former Al-Andalus.
- Carved into massive sandstone rocks.
- Built according to a basilica plan.
- Divided into three naves with characteristic horseshoe arches.
- Oriented to the east, as was customary for Christian churches.
Even after more than a thousand years, parts of the original arches are still visible.
How did the inhabitants of Bobastro live?
Life on this mountain top was not easy. Because there was no natural water source, inhabitants had to draw water from lower-lying rivers and streams. The water was brought up by jugs and stored in cisterns carved directly into the rock.
On a hike, you can still see these old water storage sites.
Archaeologists also suspect that much of the city is still hidden underground. Therefore, Bobastro remains an important site for historical research on Moorish culture in Andalusia.
